Production of kiwis

Italy is the leading producer of kiwis in the northern hemisphere. Grown following integrated production methods, the most common variety is Hayward, which has green or yellow flesh and is extremely popular on all the world’s markets. Kiwis are available from November to April.

Kiwis are a refreshing, thirst-quenching and diuretic fruit. They are one of the top 10 foods in terms of vitamin C content, considered essential for the correct functioning of the immune system and a strong antioxidant. Kiwis also have good fibre content, key to combating constipation. Kiwis ripen after harvesting when stored at room temperature and if required near fruit such as apples or pears that aid ripening. When they have reached optimal ripening, kiwis can be an excellent natural snack – simply cut in half and eat using a teaspoon.
